On January 28th, Gavin Castleton played at the Doug Fir. I'd never photographed a concert before and I faced some new challenges in that setting. I thought "lowlight-okay, I'll be using my flash and maybe I'll just put it on camera so I can move around in the crowd more easily". Well, the flash took away entirely from the atmosphere of the place and made it look like I could have been taking these pictures in the middle of the day. A larger ISO range and a faster lens would've come in handy here. I lso found there were only so many places I could shoot from and not a huge variety of angles. I tried to climb on furniture and move around as much as I could, but still didn't feel that satisfied. All the ones below are with out any flash, so they are a but grainy. The red was the actual color of the picture unaltered. His next show is on February 16th at Biddy McGraws in Portland (6000 NE Glisan St.) and his newest album, "Home", debues on February 13th, comin' right up. You can hear some of the music from this album at the link above.

It cracks me up that Brandon plays like this.

Gavin does some really sweet beat looping and I believe that's what he's doing in the picture above.
For the last couple of songs Gavin had a violinist and a saxophonist, in addition to the two guitarists, the cellist, the drummer, and his own keyboard and vocals. The concert itself was awesome and the music is incredible.
In the last couple of weeks I've had a couple of chances to play with my camera around babies. Here are a couple of my favorites.

In the last couple of weeks I've done mini-photoshoots with four 12-13 year old girls. I work with them at church and wanted to give them a portrait of themselves for their birthdays. I just went to their house, found some good light and took some pictures with the goal of getting one really great one to frame for them. It took me about 10-15 minutes each. I was very happy with the results and thought I'd share my favorites.

I spent an hour with Patience, so I could have the chance to get to know her a little more because I haven't had the chance to get to know her father, who is her only relative in the area. So naturally I have more pictures of her. We went down by the courthouse and took a walk on the docks-just chatting about movies and life. It was nice to get to know her better. Her mother was phillipino and you can see that side of her in the pictures.

This face may seem familiar to those who have glanced around this website because I took senior pictures of Garth's cousin, Kyle's, last spring. They are a lot alike and so I found myself holding back from calling Garth "Kyle" many times. We had some fun with trains and on the tracks and we went down to the Scappose Bay Marina, which is less metally and more woodsy than the St Helens Marina. We also wandered around Garth's neigbhor's property with their permission because they have a beautiful stone home, some great old barns and some old rusty equipment. If it hadn't been at the end of the shoot I probably would've played there longer.
